We make a plan—set off down the mountain to the right and head toward the ocean. After the hurricane a year ago none of us have explored that way.

“I think it’s the best bet. I haven’t spent much time on that side of the coastline,” I tell the guys.

“Neither have we,” Storm says. “We’ve been deep in the jungle, closer to the mountains. Which served us well because the water was clean and the meat supply was plentiful.”

“That’s why I stayed there as well. Just further south than you two. But man, I think we must have been crossing paths for years.”

“I probably thought you were a saber-tooth more times than I can count,” Carnage jokes and I agree.

“Crazy but true—if I heard a noise in this jungle, most times I’d go the other way.”

As we set out, I see the worry in Summer’s eyes. “What about Fancy?” she asks. “What will she do if she hears us? Run?”

I take her hand. “I don’t know, hopefully she will see you first and know help is here.”

Summer smiles, but there is fear in her eyes. With Storm and Carnage leading the way, she says, “They seem okay with you. I know you were nervous about them accepting you because of your father.”

“I think they understood you were on my side.”

She frowns. “You think they only accepted you because of me?”

I shrug. “You make a pretty convincing argument.”

She smiles. “I think they see you as a good man. We can’t be judged because of our parents. If I was… no one would talk to me.”

“You know who your biological parents were?”

“They were addicts. Chose drugs over their daughter. Wouldn’t be fair to judge my worth based on that, would it? So even if your father was an evil man, it doesn’t reflect on you. They seem to recognize that, Hammer.”

My jaw tightens, and I run a hand over it.

“What?” she asks, stopping, setting a hand on my cheek.

I shrug. “Hard to believe that sometimes, is all. That I’m not a reflection of him.”

“You’re not,” she says adamantly, pressing both her hands to my cheeks, her eyes locked with mine. “You are not.”

I want to believe her, believe this pure and beautiful woman would see me as a man with a good heart, not as a man who came from so much evil.

“Listen, Hammer,” she says. “We get a second chance here. Let’s take it. Together.”

She presses her lips to mine, and I let go, and give in. Not to the ecstasy of the promised orgy—yes, there is a thrill to that. I give in to more.

I give in to the promise of Summer, her heart, her acceptance of me.
